Why This Page Exists
If you've priced out siding in Chuckanut, vinyl has probably come up. It's inexpensive, it's everywhere, and plenty of contractors will happily install it. We don't. This page explains why, honestly and without exaggeration. Vinyl siding isn't a scam or a defective product — millions of homes wear it just fine in the right climate. Whatcom County's marine environment, with its salt-laden air off Bellingham Bay and Chuckanut's exposed bluffs, driving rain that comes in sideways off the Sound, and a moss season that can stretch nine months of the year, is not that climate. We'd rather explain the trade-offs up front than sell you a product we know will disappoint you in ten years.

What Vinyl Siding Actually Gets Right
Fair is fair. Vinyl earned its market share for real reasons:
- Low upfront material and labor cost compared to almost anything else on the market
- Never needs painting — the color is baked through the material
- Lightweight, which makes it fast to install and easy to ship
- Resists rot outright, since it's plastic and doesn't absorb water the way wood does
- Widely available in a huge range of colors and profiles
In a drier inland climate, or on a home with deep eaves and full sun exposure, vinyl can hold up reasonably well for one to two decades. The problem isn't vinyl in general. It's vinyl in Chuckanut specifically.
The Salt Air Problem
Chuckanut sits close enough to the water that salt-laden air is a constant, low-grade presence on every exterior surface of a home. Salt doesn't rot vinyl the way it corrodes metal fasteners, but it does something almost as damaging over time: it settles into the panel's surface texture and the overlapping seams, holding moisture against the wall longer than plain rainwater would on its own. Vinyl siding is installed with loose-fitting panels that are designed to expand and contract with temperature — that same looseness is what lets salt-carrying moisture work its way behind the panels at the laps and around penetrations like hose bibs, vents, and light fixtures. Fiber cement doesn't eliminate salt exposure, but its factory-applied finish and tighter installation tolerances give it a harder, more consistent surface for salt residue to sit on rather than migrate into.
Fastener and Trim Corrosion
Salt air is hardest on the metal components around any siding system — J-channel, flashing, and fasteners. Vinyl systems rely heavily on these accessory pieces because the panels themselves are non-structural and hang loosely on the wall. When trim fasteners corrode faster than expected in a salt-air environment, the panels they hold can loosen, warp at the edges, or pop out of their track years before the vinyl itself would otherwise need replacing.
Driving Rain and Wind-Driven Water
Whatcom County storms don't always fall straight down. Wind off the water pushes rain sideways into wall assemblies, and Chuckanut's exposed, elevated lots see more of this than sheltered inland neighborhoods do. Vinyl siding is installed as an overlapping shingle system with intentional gaps for drainage and expansion — it was never engineered to be watertight on its own. In calm rain, that drainage design works fine. In sustained wind-driven rain, water can get pushed uphill through the laps, especially at inside corners, window returns, and anywhere the wall geometry isn't perfectly flat.
Once water gets behind vinyl, there's very little for it to do except sit against the weather barrier and sheathing until it evaporates or finds a way out. Homes with good building wrap and flashing detail tolerate this reasonably well. Homes with aging or improperly lapped wrap — common in older Chuckanut housing stock — are more exposed to slow moisture accumulation that isn't visible from the outside until it shows up as soft sheathing or interior staining.
Moss, Algae, and the Long Wet Season
A long moss season is one of the defining features of maintaining a home's exterior anywhere in this part of Washington, and Chuckanut's tree cover and shade patterns make it worse than average. Vinyl's textured, slightly porous surface — especially the wood-grain embossed profiles — gives algae and moss spores something to grip onto. Because vinyl doesn't have a hard factory topcoat the way fiber cement does, growth tends to establish faster and requires more frequent washing to keep the siding looking clean, particularly on north-facing walls and anywhere shaded by conifers.
The Maintenance Homeowners Don't Expect
Vinyl is marketed as "maintenance-free," and in a dry climate that's close to true. In a wet, shaded, salt-air climate like Chuckanut's, it isn't. Realistic upkeep looks like:
- Annual or twice-yearly soft-washing to keep moss and algae from staining the surface long-term
- Periodic inspection of J-channel and corner posts for warping or loosening
- Watching for panel bowing after hot summer stretches, which can create gaps at the laps
- Re-caulking around penetrations more often than a harder-surfaced product would need

None of these numbers are a guarantee — every home's exposure, shading, and prior water management differ. But the pattern holds consistently enough across coastal Whatcom County that we stopped installing vinyl years ago.

We install James Hardie fiber cement exclusively, and it's not because of a manufacturer relationship or a sales incentive — it's because fiber cement handles this specific climate better than the alternatives we've tried, including vinyl, LP SmartSide, and cedar. A few specifics that matter here:
- Non-combustible core. Fiber cement doesn't burn, melt, or deform the way vinyl can near grills, fire pits, or radiant heat sources.
- ColorPlus factory finish. The color and protective topcoat are baked on in a controlled environment, giving a harder, more consistent surface than field-applied paint or vinyl's through-body color — which matters directly for moss and algae resistance.
- HZ5 product engineering. Hardie's HZ5 line is engineered specifically for climates with freeze-thaw cycling and sustained moisture exposure, which describes a Chuckanut winter well.
- Rigid, tightly-installed panels. Fiber cement doesn't rely on the same loose, expansion-driven lap system vinyl uses, which reduces the pathways for wind-driven rain to get behind the cladding.
- Strong transferable warranty. A long-term, non-prorated warranty on both the substrate and the ColorPlus finish, which matters if you sell the home before the siding's functional life is up.
What Correct Installation Requires — Either Way
It's worth saying plainly: most siding failures in this region, vinyl or otherwise, trace back to installation and water management, not the cladding material itself. A checklist we hold ourselves to on every job, regardless of product:
- Continuous, properly lapped weather-resistive barrier behind the cladding
- Correct flashing at every window, door, and roof-to-wall transition
- Rainscreen gap or drainage plane where the wall assembly calls for it
- Manufacturer-specified fastener spacing and clearance from grade
- Sealant only where the manufacturer specifies it — not as a substitute for flashing
A poorly installed Hardie job can fail early, and a well-installed vinyl job can last a long time. But when the installation is done right on both, fiber cement gives Chuckanut homeowners a meaningfully wider margin against salt air, wind-driven rain, and moss than vinyl does.
Who Vinyl Might Still Make Sense For
We're not going to pretend vinyl has no place. If you're working with a tight budget on a detached structure, a shed, or a low-exposure inland property with full sun and good overhangs, vinyl can be a reasonable, honest choice — just not one we install.
